Vioxx was the third prescription drug sold in the US in the week prior to the recall. Both products had active ingredient compounds in Celebrex, and Vioxx was the second. Sales of Celebrex were $1.1 billion in the US and accounted for $5.2 billion in the US alone. The manufacturer of Vioxx had sales of $600 million. Sales of Vioxx are expected to continue throughout the remainder of the week. Vioxx was the only product recalled after it was withdrawn from the market following negative clinical and laboratory studies. Vioxx was also the first medication to be recalled in the US after being associated with serious adverse events.
